Using technology & progress words in English

Emerging-technology vocabulary is built almost entirely from compounds, and the interesting question is how English joins them: machine learning stays two words, self-driving takes a hyphen, and cryptocurrency has fused into one. This page sets out the pattern, which is more predictable than it first appears, and covers a Greek plural still alive in the field.

What to watch out for

Words learners mix up

Technology writing is full of words that sound like neutral description and are actually claims — about how soon something dies, how the future will go, and what a product can do. These three clusters are where the claims hide.

Redundant is the trap: in British employment English it means a post has been removed, but in engineering it means a backup exists — a redundant server is a good thing. Only context separates them, and the two senses are almost opposite in value.

The vocabulary of predicted futures

None of these is neutral. Singularity asserts a prediction, moonshot flatters a budget request, and frontier imports the language of exploration and settlement. In an essay, attribute them — what its advocates call a moonshot — rather than adopting them.

Engineering adjectives: what is actually being promised?

Modular and interoperable can be checked against a specification; seamless and streamlined describe how something feels and are the marketing end of the list. That is the same test worth applying to any adjective in a product announcement.

Collocations that sound natural

Technical writing pairs these nouns with a very narrow set of verbs and adjectives, and most of the pairings are about quantity — how much, how fast, how little delay.

Formal, neutral or informal?

This vocabulary divides into working technical terms, speculative words borrowed from fiction, and a set of borrowings whose confidence outruns the evidence. Mixing the three is what makes technology writing sound credulous.

Questions about technology & progress vocabulary

When do technology compounds take a hyphen?

The general rule is positional. Hyphenate a compound when it comes before the noun it modifies — a machine-learning model, a self-driving car, fibre-optic cable — and leave it open when it follows the verb: the car is self driving is rare, but the model uses machine learning is standard. Over time, frequently used compounds close up entirely, which is how cryptocurrency, blockchain and smartphone became single words. Where a dictionary already shows a closed form, use it.

Is "cryptocurrency" countable?

Both, depending on what you mean. As a category it is uncountable: investment in cryptocurrency has fallen. When you mean particular currencies it becomes countable: Bitcoin and several other cryptocurrencies. This is the same pattern that governs technology and innovation — uncountable for the field, countable for individual instances. Blockchain behaves slightly differently and is usually uncountable when it names the technology, but countable when you mean a specific ledger.

What is the plural of "automaton"?

Automata is the Greek plural and is standard in technical, mathematical and philosophical writing — finite-state automata. Automatons is also perfectly acceptable in general English and is more common when the word is used figuratively of people behaving mechanically. This is typical of Greek and Latin borrowings in English: the classical plural survives in the technical field where the word is a term of art, while the regular English plural takes over in ordinary use.
