The present continuous tense, also called the present progressive, is formed with the auxiliary am, is or are plus the -ing form of the main verb. It describes what is happening now or around now, covering both the immediate moment — I'm writing an email — and temporary situations that stretch across a period, such as I'm staying with friends this week.
It also has three uses that surprise learners. It expresses fixed future arrangements, as in I'm meeting Ana at seven. It describes gradual change, as in the days are getting shorter. And combined with always it conveys irritation rather than frequency: he's always losing his keys.
A band around now, open at both ends: the action started before this moment and is expected to carry on past it. The edges are deliberately vague — the present continuous never says when the action began.

Why can I not say I am knowing?
Know is a state verb — it describes a mental condition rather than an activity, and states do not have a beginning and end in the way actions do. State verbs include know, understand, believe, want, need, like, prefer, belong and own. All of them take the present simple even when you mean right now.
How do I spell the -ing form?
Most verbs just add -ing. Verbs ending in a silent -e drop it first, so write becomes writing. Short verbs ending in a single vowel plus a single consonant double the consonant: run becomes running. Verbs ending in -ie change to -y, giving lie/lying and die/dying.
Can the present continuous really talk about the future?
Yes, and it is the most natural way to express a personal arrangement that is already fixed: I'm seeing the dentist on Thursday. The key is that the arrangement is settled, usually with another person involved. For predictions and spontaneous decisions you need will instead.
